In a report delivered to the House Budget Committee on June 2, the CBO said a “fair value” accounting of guaranteeing the two defunct mortgage companies – known as Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) – was more than twice as high as the Office of Management and Budget had accounted for.

...“In contrast, the Administration’s Office of Management and Budget continues to treat Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as nongovernmental entities for budgetary purposes, and thus outside the budget,” the report stated. “It records as outlays the amount of the net cash payments provided by the Treasury to the GSEs.”

Not that we don't know this. From a purely fiscal perspective, when paying a fee is cheaper than covering your employees, you go with the cheaper option. So ObamaCare is looking to hurt people on both ends - by incentivizing employers to drop employees from healthcare coverage, and by making healthcare more expensive for the consumer. ObamaCare is and was a Trojan horse to create the problem under which liberals will step up their efforts fro a government-run single payer system. Once provisions of the Affordable Care Act start to kick in during 2014, at least three of every 10 employers will probably stop offering health coverage, a survey released Monday shows.

While only 7% of employees will be forced to switch to subsidized-exchange programs, at least 30% of companies say they will “definitely or probably” stop offering employer-sponsored coverage, according to the study published in McKinsey Quarterly.

“At least 30% of employers would gain economically from dropping coverage, even if they completely compensated employees for the change through other benefit offerings or higher salaries,” the study says.

Those employees dropped from coverage are now on their own to find some. And they must do it because of the unconstitutional mandate. But there's a way out: Obama: If you don't like ObamaCare mandate, EARN LESS MONEY! Not raising the debt ceiling will result in ZERO defaults on those obligations. Unless of course he wants to default for political points. We will see. But the liberal above himself disproved the Democratic Party notion that not raising the debt ceiling will cause the US to default on debt obligations and reduce our credit worthiness. Is it me, or did Stephen Henderson take the red pill yesterday morning? Last Friday, I put up this piece blasting the MI House GOP for allowing Detroit to fleece its residents: MI House OKs tax hike for Detroiters. Uh - what? On Sunday, Detroit Free Press editor Stephen Henderson wrote an editorial...  blasting the MI House GOP for allowing Detroit to fleece its residents! This from the freep that never saw a Granholm tax increase that they didn't like. Stephen Henderson: Help Detroit break its high-tax habit. I have many times described the Democrats tax and spend policies as akin to drug addiction. Same with forcing government dependency on the poor. Check out the editorial:

Like an addict who can't see that the drug will eventually kill him, the City of Detroit needs an intervention to jar it from a destructive reliance on excessive taxes.

The question here is what the freep considers "excessive" but I'll save that for another time.

When the city's low census numbers made it legally impossible to maintain the state's highest income tax rate and a unique tax on utility bills, Mayor Dave Bing did the equivalent of going to the pusher for just one more fix.

The city couldn't survive without the money, the mayor told the Legislature. The 2.5% the city takes from residents' paychecks, the 1.25% it extracts from those of nonresidents, and the 5% it tacks onto gas and electric bills amount to a quarter of a billion dollars, with a good slice of it coming from some of Michigan's poorest residents.

Last week, the state House indulged, and lowered population thresholds for levying such taxes.

...Hooray! We get to keep our destructive habit.

...The sad truth is that in seeking to renew the taxes, Bing missed a great opportunity to begin a meaningful conversation about the city's polluted tax environment.

...When you add up all the taxes city residents pay, it equates to 99 mills -- more than triple the average homestead levy in the state. (For businesses, it's double the tax burden in other cities.)

Detroit taxes are high enough to give any family good reason to live elsewhere, especially since city services are hardly equivalent to other cities with lower taxes.

The net effect is scarily similar to a drug habit.

Is this not a tacit admission that liberal policies of taxing the pulp fiction out of people simply don't work? Why is it then that Stephen has stood by Granholm and her tax and spend policies for the state? And for that matter Obama's? If he sees the destruction of such policies in Detroit, why can't he seem to see the same at the state and federal levels? Keep taking that red pill, Stephen!

Sarah Palin yesterday insisted her claim at the Old North Church last week that Paul Revere “warned the British” during his famed 1775 ride — remarks that Democrats and the media roundly ridiculed — is actually historically accurate. And local historians are backing her up.

Palin prompted howls of partisan derision when she said on Boston’s Freedom Trail that Revere “warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free.”

...In fact, Revere’s own account of the ride in a 1798 letter seems to back up Palin’s claim. Revere describes how after his capture by British officers, he warned them “there would be five hundred Americans there in a short time for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.”

...the state’s Democratic Party held a thin blue line on the issue, insisting on mocking Palin despite a brief historical review of the matter. State party chairman John Walsh wise-cracked that the region welcomes all tourists, even those with “an alternative view of history.”

“If you believe he was riding through the countryside sending text messages and Tweets to the British, still come to Boston,” he said. “There are a lot of things to do and see.”

That's all pretty much predictable for an entire party stricken with Palin Derangement Syndrome. But then the Boston Herald quotes a conservative blogger (didn't see this one coming):

...Cornell law professor William Jacobson, who asserted last week that Palin was correct, linking to Revere quotes on his conservative blog Legalinsurrection.com, said Palin’s critics are the ones in need of a history lesson. “It seems to be a historical fact that this happened,” he said. “A lot of the criticism is unfair and made by people who are themselves ignorant of history.”

When I pointed out a fact, that Revere himself wrote that he had warned the British that the colonial militias were waiting, the anti-Palinites went into full attack mode, calling me a "deranged propagandist," of making Palin "an object of idolatry," and of validating "the vagina vote." 

Charles Johnson purported to uncover a conspiracy by one person to update the Wikipedia entry on Revere, although Charles did not point out what would have been inaccurate about the updates. 

The debate also shifted, from she was wrong as to the fact of the warning to she was wrong as to Revere's intent.  The goal posts constantly were moved.  All in all, there was an intellectual shut down by those on the left and right who don't like Palin, an unwillingness to consider facts which contradicted their narrative.

The media are absolutely not right to rake her over the coals for what she said about Paul Revere. Palin's statement was correct - Paul Revere did issue warnings to the British during his famous midnight ride - as the historians quoted in this story explain.

The problem here is not with Palin. It's with the media, who apparently know nothing of Paul Revere's ride apart from what was said in Longfellow's famous poem. This is similar to when Palin told tea party activists to "party like it's 1773," and the media - knowing nothing of the Boston Tea Party - ripped her on the baseless assumption that Palin must have been talking about the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Clearly, Palin knows more about history than her media tormenters, but we've gotten to the point where facts scarcely matter in situations like this. It is now established media wisdom that Palin committed a "gaffe" and got the history wrong, and even when the facts turn out to demonstrate she got it right, it is still somehow a faux pas because she made a statement that everyone thought was wrong.

...These are the days when I think this country is just screwed.

What was Wasserman-Schultz referring to in that 2006 quote? The behavior of Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL . . . are you watching those party labels?), who made advances towards 18 and 21 year old young men.

In fact, she went as far as to demand the resignation of then Speaker Denny Hastert for not addressing the Foley matter quickly enough.

Public prayer will be allowed at a Texas high school graduation after a federal appeals court on Friday reversed a ban won by an agnostic family that claimed ceremony traditions such as invocations were unconstitutional.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted an emergency appeal filed by the Medina Valley Independent School District. Its San Antonio-area high school was ordered by a federal judge earlier this week to forbid students from asking audience members to join in prayer or bow their heads during Saturday's graduation.

The federal judge absurdly banned the words "amen" and "God bless you." He also banned having the audience rise or bow their heads. The 2nd best part of the news is the reaction from the valedictorian:

...The school's valedictorian, Angela Hildenbrand, had filed an intervention lawsuit that claimed she was being deprived of her right to pray for her classmates and community during her speech. Upon hearing of the court's decision, she paused for a few seconds and then said she "took the time to thank God."

Heh. And burning coals were heaped on the federal judge's head.

2 1/2 years after he pushed through the stimulus boondoggle after promising it would create 3.5 million NEW jobs and keep the unemployment under 8%, the unemployment rates continues to be above 9% (National Unemployment Rate At 9% More Than 2 Years After Obama Promised It Would Never Go Above 8%; Labor Participation Rate Still At All-Time Low) and 3 million jobs have been lost rather than gained. Artificially because the federal government calculates the unemployment rate like Enron accounted for its debt. This happens in other areas too. For instance, they leave out energy costs and food costs from the inflation rate. But back to the unemployment rate. One way to keep the unemployment rate artificially low is to keep people from entering the workforce in the first place. ...CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker reports that many 16- to 19-year-olds are finding the going rough when it comes to finding work once school is out.

Nearly 14 million Americans are looking for work

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate for those aged 16 to 19 last month was more than 24 percent. Compare that to May of 2000, when the rate was less than 13 percent.

It will come as no surprise that blue states are getting it the worst:

...The latest figures show California's unemployment rate among teenagers is more than 34 percent, which is nearly triple the state's overall unemployment rate of 11.9 percent. In cities such as Irvine, California, job fairs have been canceled because few companies have agreed to participate.

More important than the unemployment rate is the employment rate, which is at a record low and can't be gamed like the unemployment rate is. For instance: Employment rate for black men at record low. See what I mean?

It's all about him. Always was. Always is. Why the liberal obsession with trains? Easy - control. If you have a car you can go where you want when you want. With mass transit, the liberal elite will control where you go and when. To the liberal, everything is about controlling you.

Figures: Government Motors colluded with Obama regime to lie to American people regarding loan payback that wasn't

An update from last September when I wrote this: Old GM CEO: We repaid the bailout in full with interest! New GM CEO: Repaying bailout could take years. As I reported multiple times already, the Obama administration, through its appointed CEO Ed Whitacre, delivered a blitzkrieg of public advertising with supposed good news in claiming that GM had paid off its government TARP loan 5 years early and with interest. The intellectually non-curious MSM regurgitated the talking points with nary a question. I had one one though - how could a company that hadn't posted a solid profit since 2004 pay back anyone a single red cent? In fact, I was the first blogger, to my knowledge, to pose that GM paid back its government loan with other government loan money. Here are the hard facts as I have reported before:

1. There were essentially 2 bailout accounts, one an $8 billion loan and the other a $49.5 billion escrow account (like a line of credit), both from TARP funds (apparently, most of that escrow was used to get a 61% government stake in GM)
2. GM used the escrow TARP funds to pay the TARP loan
3. GM did this to get another $10 billion loan from the Department of Energy (see update on this post)

 

GM had 2 government accounts. They used one account to close out the other. That's like paying off one of your credit cards with another one, say your Visa with your Master Card. You didn't really pay off anything. But then again, this is the kind of BS you expect from the AP these days.

In any case, the new news is that GM was colluding all along with Obama to spoon feed the above BS to you the American consumer. From The Michigan View: Obama Administration, GM, work together to sell us a story

The stench of the feds' takeover of GM keeps getting worse.

"Documents released last week by the U.S. Treasury Department indicate that General Motors and the Obama administration coordinated their PR strategy regarding GM's much criticized 2010 ad campaign, in which the car maker misleadingly claimed to have repaid all its government loans."

Paul Krugman: We Need To End Medicare As We Know It
