Video report: 40,000 Detroit Public School Students That Can Neither Read Nor Write Get New Laptops

An update on Tuesday's post: Irony: Detroit Free Press touts 40,000 "free" laptops to DPS kids days after reporting DPS laptops being hocked at pawn shops. For the record, Detroit Public Schools (DPS) was until recently run by an illiterate. The emergency financial manager declared that only 1 out of 3 students can be serviced because of obscene union benefits that are sucking the district dry. Which is why this is happening: Detroit Public Schools No Longer Preparing Kids For College, Instead Some Are Being Prepped For Cosmetology, Culinary Arts. DPS only graduates 1 in 4 students and the vast majority of the kids can't read their own diplomas. And those that make it through are not at all prepared for either college or career. Those not dropping out have such bad scores on national standardized tests that Michael Casserly, executive director of the Council of the Great City Schools, had this to say:

"These numbers are only slightly better than what one would expect by chance as if the kids had never gone to school and simply guessed at the answers"

I asked in my prior post: "how is an infusion of laptops for students that can neither read nor write going to do anything but waste taxpayer money. Oh, that's right - it's stimulus money. So this $49 million is going to be thrown down the proverbial toilet just like the hundreds of billions before it. " The story of the laptop boondoggle has made it on the national stage:

The American Thinker picked up the story the day after I posted on it: Big Stimulus Money for Detroit Public Schools (HT: Kathy Hoekstra on FB). In that post, writer J. Robert Smith made the identical arguments that I made:

...All the new technology is fine as it goes, but there's a hitch. Detroit public school kids have trouble with the basics, like simple math, reading, and writing. In fact, a little over a year ago, a whopping 69% of Detroit fourth-graders scored "below basic" on math testing. The scores have dropped to an historic low. Reading and science scores aren't impressive either. According to the Education Policy Center at Michigan State University, only 31.9% of Detroit's public school students graduate in four years. Greatschools.org gives Detroit public schools a mere three out of ten on its excellence scale.

So why $49 million for laptops when too many Detroit kids can't successfully use old fashioned pencils and paper to write simple words and sentences and do basic math? Why stuff like Kindle when kids can't even read from cardboard and paper books? ...

Said organization was tagged as an unindicted co-conspirator in raising money to fund Hamas terrorism.This is an organization of extremists. That very group is suing conservative blogger Debbie Schlussel, who blogs quite a bit about radical Islam, for using the groups name. For the record, Schlussel registered CAIR Michigan Inc. with the state of Michigan. She also operates the site cairmichigan.com. Local officials for a Muslim civil rights organization have filed a lawsuit to stop a conservative commentator from using the group's name.

Dawud Walid, the executive director of Council on American-Islamic Relations-Michigan, said his group today filed a federal lawsuit this week against Debbie Schlussel alleging she is illegally using the group's name and has created the site cairmichigan.com. Walid's organization's website is cairmichigan.org.

Ironically, the terrorist-enabling CAIR is upset because they claim their name has been of all things... hijacked:

"I'm not an attorney, but I do know it's a violation of federal trademark (laws) to hijack the name of an organization," said Walid today. "CAIR is one of the most visible Muslim organization in these United States of America. I can't speak to directly to her motivations but in our opinion, Debbie Schlussel is an extremely intolerant person … a well-known anti-Muslim, anti-Arab bigot."

Part of Walid's dislike of Schlussel is that she outed him as the criminal that he is (Delano Anthony Willis, a criminal convict transplant from Virginia).

Schlussel, a Southfield attorney, said CAIR Michigan abandoned the name six years ago and her unnamed client took it and wanted her to be executive director of the website.

"I'm not confusing anyone," said Schlussel. "There is only one CAIR Michigan Inc. and it is one registered by me."

Archbishop Timothy Dolan is calling for efforts to make abortions in New York City “rare.”

Uh - isn't that what Democrats have been saying forever now? Safe and rare? Well, abortion is neither. Every abortion kills a life, so it's not safe. And certainly Democrats don't want it to be rare either. Their vote for ObamaCare proved that fact decisively.

Dolan gathered with other religious leaders on Thursday to draw attention to the city’s high abortion rate. The city health department last month released statistics that showed 41 percent of pregnancies were terminated in 2009.

While the numbers have declined in the last decade, the religious leaders said they are still too high.

Dolan said the practice is unlikely to end but that it was important ‘to tell people what is happening.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that the religious leaders also criticized public schools sex education programs that include condom distribution.

That condom distribution is largely from Planned Parenthood that by the way have the highest failure rate of any condom as listed by the CDC. They have let evil into the public schools through wide open doors. How is this different than Molech worship in Old Testament times?

It begins: As entitlements grow, Pentagon to cut spending by $78 billion, reduce troop strength

There is only one cut liberals are willing to make, and that's to the military. Forget the entitlement spending - aka buying votes with our money - that sucks up the majority of the budget. Cuts now need to be made because of liberal overspending, and the military is on the chopping block. ...Under direction from the White House, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates on Thursday announced that the Pentagon will cut projected spending by $78 billion over the next five years and shrink the size of the Army and Marine Corps. The changes mean that the military would see annual budget increases that barely exceed inflation in coming years and that its budget will effectively remain frozen in 2015 and 2016.

Gates said the cuts are a result of the "extreme fiscal duress" facing the country. But they are also an acknowledgment of a rapidly shifting political sentiment on Capitol Hill, where senior Democrats and Republicans alike have suggested in recent weeks that defense spending -- which accounts for a fifth of the federal budget -- is no longer a sacred cow.

In a news conference, Gates said the White House's proposed budget for the Pentagon next year would be $553 billion, excluding the cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, less than a 1 percent increase over what it requested for 2011. Although he said the military could live with flat budgets in the coming years, Gates warned that deeper cuts in troop levels, overseas bases and weapons programs would be "risky at best and potentially calamitous."

Just for a sense of scale, the deficit is running at around $1.5 trillion per year. Cutting $78 billion, or $0.078 trillion over 5 years is like taking water out of the Titanic with an 8 oz Styrofoam cup. It will make zero difference in the overspending problem, but it sure as heck will hurt the military. Relatedly, I had this September '09: Study: Obama Will Spend More on Welfare in the Next Year Than Bush Spent on Entire Iraq War. As it urns out, the numbers are quite revealing:

Cost of Iraq war during Bush's entire 2 terms (2003-2008): $622 billion (Congressional Research Service)

Cost of welfare for just the FY2010 budget: $888 billion

Or stated another way in terms what each household must pay each month:

Iraq War: $100 per month

Welfare: $638 per month in 2010

I agree with the spending proportions of 1945 relative to each other because the feds have the constitutional authority to defend the US, but not the authority to run social experiments via entitlement programs. Ever since the 1930s with the 'new deal', this country has gone downhill because of what I can only term vote buying via wealth redistribution mechanisms. That is not constitutional, and thus I oppose them. As time goes on, entitlements will continue to grow and swamp the entire budget. As a matter of logical fact, when you give away someone else's money, you run out of it at some point. Here's another graphic that I put up related to defense spending:

Again, defense spending is getting crowded out. Cutting the Pentagon budget that is explicitly allowed by the constitution to fund entitlement programs that are not is a mistake in my opinion. We need to reign in spending, especially of the entitlement variety, not expand it.

Weiner is stuck on stupid with the absurdity that repealing ObamaCare actually costs something. Let's just get a few things straight with that line of 'reasoning.' From the CBO Director's Blog via memeorandum: CBO's Preliminary Analysis of H.R. 2, the Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act. In the piece, the director claims that repealing ObamaCare will indeed cost $1.2 trillion. But it's not true. Why? Because this same director claimed before the passage of eth bill that it would actually cost around that, not save it. Via Don Surber:

Elmendorf’s blunt language startled lawmakers racing to meet Obama’s deadline for approving a bill by the August break. The CBO is the official arbiter of the cost of legislation. Fiscal conservatives in the House said Elmendorf’s testimony would galvanize the growing number of Democrats agitating for changes in the more than $1.2 trillion House bill, which aims to cover 97 percent of Americans by 2015.

He later caved to Democratic pressure and wound up saying the $1.2 trillion cost was really a savings of a quarter-trillion dollars.

It wasn't as much a cave as it was a manipulation of information sent to the CBO for scoring by Congressional Democrats. If you know the algorithms and the desired result, it's quite easy to game the input to get the desired result. After ObamaCare was passed, the Medicare actuary testified that ObamaCare indeed bent the cost curve... UP! US unemployment rate falls to 9.4% because people gave up looking for work, jobs growth "far below most analysts' expectations"

Well, the kind of good news is that just over 100,000 jobs were added in December '09. The bad news? It takes a monthly jobs growth of about 100,000 just to keep up with population growth as kids mature into working-age. So the December number for jobs growth is realistically ZERO, but don't look for the establishment MSM to point that out. From the AP via The Detroit News:

The nation's unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent last month, its lowest level in 19 months. That was because more people found jobs, but also because some people gave up on their job searches.

The Labor Department said today employers added 103,000 jobs in December, an improvement from November's revised total of 71,000 but far below most analysts' expectations.

Once unemployed workers stop looking for work, the government no longer counts them as unemployed.

Through all of 2010, the nation added 1.1 million jobs, or an average of 94,000 jobs a month.

Or, stated another way, the jobs growth fell short of the 100,000 needed each month just to keep up with population increase and is therefore negative. Can we now officially call the stimulus a failure? It has made the problem worse, not better. Keep in mind that in October of 2006 — just before the Democrats took Congress — unemployment was 4.4%. We have now been above 9.5% for 16 straight months until the December number. Obama promised that 3.5 million NEW private-sector jobs will be created by the $1.2 trillion stimulus bill ($800 billion + interest over 10 years since the US is bankrupt) by 2010. Instead, more than 3 million jobs have been lost. Here is what has been happening with Biden's 3-letter word since last year:

3.7 million fewer jobs to lose, and that's neglecting the corrections that were made to the jobs numbers from last year that showed even bigger losses. Recall that the stimulus package was supposed to stop the unemployment rate at 8%! A crisis could become a calamity? Remember that? Here's how that looks (via Michael's Comments):

Note that the blue lines are the numbers that Obama's team came up with. So the actual unemployment rate is not only worse that what would happen with porkulus, but even worse than was predicted without it. The stimulus bill was and is a fraud perpetrated by Obama on the American people to pay back his union hacks that got him elected. Nothing more, nothing less.

Poetic justice: NPR hack that fired Juan Williams forced to resign

Juan Williams was fired for violating Sharia Law that NPR is enforcing by fiat:

The hack that fired him is one Ellen Weiss, 1st Lieutenant of Vivian Schiller, who asserted that Juan Williamsis psychologically retarded for violating Sharia Law (but mostly for being a contributor to Fox News if truth be told):

Ellen Weiss resigned as senior vice president for news on the same day that NPR's board of directors completed its independent review of the dismissal of Williams. The directors recommended new internal procedures for personnel decisions and disciplinary action.

So in other words, she was likely given the choice of resigning or getting fired.

The board expressed confidence in CEO Vivian Schiller's leadership but voted to forgo her 2010 bonus because of "concern over her role in the termination process." Schiller drew criticism in November for saying Williams should keep his feelings about Muslims between him and "his psychiatrist or publicist" -- comments that she later apologized for.

Williams, who is a Fox News contributor, cheered the announcement.

"It's good news for NPR if they can get someone who is the keeper of the flame of liberal orthodoxy out of NPR," he told Fox News, which gave Williams a bigger role as a contributor in the wake of his firing.

"She had an executioner's knife for anybody who didn't abide by her way of thinking," he said. "And I think she represented a very ingrown, incestuous culture in that institution that's not open to not only different ways of thinking but angry at the fact that I would even talk or be on Fox."

Once again - why are my taxpayer dollars going to fund NPR that espouses liberalism? There are literally thousands of choices for consumers in this day and age. Former longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas has become a columnist for a free weekly paper in a Washington suburb, months after a controversy forced her from her previous post.

Thomas's first column about Social Security appeared Thursday in the Falls Church News-Press, a northern Virginia publication with circulation of about 30,000.

Of course, the AP news comes with a hefty side of bias:

Thomas, 90, covered 10 presidents at the White House starting in 1960 and also had worked for UPI. She resigned in June from her latest role as a Hearst News Service columnist after saying Israelis should get "out of Palestine."

More people applied last week for unemployment benefits, one week after applications fell to the lowest level in more than two years. Applications rose by 18,000 to a seasonally adjusted 409,000 in the week ending Jan. 1, the Labor Department said today.

Of course, with unemployment half what it is today, they didn’t have to.

When Bush was president, we would get headlines announcing that the “Economy Only Creates 139,000 New Jobs” with a subhead wondering if that meant we were in a recession. Now losing a quarter of million jobs is presented as the herald of a new golden age.

Sometimes I think our media is more interested in spin than in facts.

Ya think? And reader Edward Craig emails: “They said on CNBC this morning that jobless claims will be probably be revised upward because states laid off so many workers they lack the staff to process them fast enough.”...

Indeed the AP reached for its own silver lining:

Fewer than 425,000 people seeking unemployment benefits signals modest job growth.

...Other recent data has signaled that economic growth is accelerating, and that hiring may follow suit.

Again, no such desperate reaching for silver linings during Bush's two terms.

A death certificate said she died from the incurable breast cancer that returned in 2007 as John Edwards campaigned for the presidency. ...

Just for the record, they were sworn in HOURS ago. It hasn't even been one God-blessed day yet! What are the proposed exemptions that will hurt us? Why repealing ObamaCare of course! Never mind that the numbers were gamed in the first place. Let's see, ObamaCare kicks in 2014 but the taxes started in 2010, so 6 years of benefits for 10 years of taxes. plus the doctor fix. Plus the bilking of Medicare for $500 billion. Plus the double counting of savings. Plus the Medicare actuary coming out after passage of the bill saying that ObamaCare bent the cost curve upwards. Plus the fact that every government entitlement program has been more expensive than first predicted. All that doen't matter to the AP or the Detroit Free Press. All that does matter is Democrat rhetoric that they are all to willing to pass on to us readers:

Harry Reid wants to raise the debt ceiling above the absurd $14.3 trillion that it's at now. Whenever this ceiling gets raised, my first instinct is to ask why the heck we even have a debt ceiling when politicians raise it ever higher anyway? Harry Reid 2011 ought to talk about debt ceilings with Harry Reid 2006:

“If my Republican friends believe that increasing our debt by almost $800 billion today and more than $3 trillion over the last five years is the right thing to do, they should be upfront about it. They should explain why they think more debt is good for the economy.

How can the Republican majority in this Congress explain to their constituents that trillions of dollars in new debt is good for our economy? How can they explain that they think it’s fair to force our children, our grandchildren, our great grandchildren to finance this debt through higher taxes. That’s what it will have to be. Why is it right to increase our nation’s dependence on foreign creditors?

They should explain this. Maybe they can convince the public they’re right. I doubt it. Because most Americans know that increasing debt is the last thing we should be doing. After all, I repeat, the Baby Boomers are about to retire. Under the circumstances, any credible economist would tell you we should be reducing debt, not increasing it.Democrats won’t be making argument to supper this legalization, which will weaken our country. Obama himself voted against raising th edebt ceiling in 2006, to which his propaganda czar had this to say: Gibbs: Obama only voted against raising the debt ceiling in 2006 because he knew his vote wouldn’t matter. Where there's yet another display of Obama leadership for ya! Allahpundit comments:

The One took plenty of votes during his brief layover in the Senate that were aimed squarely at polishing his record for a presidential run down the road. The one on the debt ceiling was aimed at centrists; the votes against Roberts and Alito were aimed at his base.
