For the record I am a big fan of photovoltaics. There are no moving parts so if the system is installed properly you won't have to touch it for a couple of decades. It's simple. And it works. At least when the sun shines, which is why this just looks bad:

In the case of D.C. this weekend, we received a this picture from a PR event … where a pro-solar sign was literally powered by a gas generator.* How’s that for a metaphor?
A bit hard to tell in the pic, but if you want a sign to light up on demand, you need a controllable source.
