Comedy Gold! Chris Matthews, who derides Palin as stupid, says Panama Canal is in... EGYPT!

Chris Matthews is in de Nile. He has been deriding Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann as being a couple of bubble-headed idiots. A flashback not from years but from mere days ago:
What's good for the goose, should be good for the gander. In this video, Matthews claims at the 1:20 mark that Egypt contains the Panama Canal. Yeah - THEE Panama Canal. From NewsBusters via OnlyWaxing on YouTube:
So who's the bubble head now, tweetie? That tingle up your leg get to what's left of your brain? Last year, Matthews called Sarah Palin a "mail-order bride" and Howard Fineman was right there to imply she was a one-night stand:
And that came after Matthews attacked U.S. house Representative Michelle Bachmann from Minnesota calling her the the "Mata Hari of Minnesota." I posted on that and other attacks on Bachmann before (Rep. Bachmann (R-Min) Under (ad hominem) Attack by the Left) where I included this video:
Mata Hari, by the way, was an exotic dancer executed as a spy during WWI.This guy also claims that ‘FDR Bailed Out Capitalism in the 30s’ despite the evidence that FDRs public spending prolonged the depression for many years until WWII got us out of it.

UPDATE #2: A thread on this at memeorandum, with more commentary from Hugh Hewitt, Right Wing News and Proof Positive

UPDATE #3: Even more from UrbanGrounds, Scared Monkeys and Left Coast Rebel. In a related note, NewsBusters has this: Palin and Bachmann Nitpicker Chris Matthews Says Panama Canal Is In Egypt. And from Powerline:  Chris Matthews's Obsession
...Matthews takes obsession to the brink of insanity. What possible reason is there to begin one's coverage of events in Egypt with partisan references to George Bush and Iraq? How on earth do riots in Egypt and Tunisia "prov[e] the Iraq war wasn't needed?" Two weeks ago Egypt and Tunisia were quiet; was that evidence that the Iraq war was needed? Libya is quiet still; is that evidence that the Iraq war was necessary? This is all a bizarre non sequitur.
Matthews says that the current unrest is "aimed at dictators supported by the U.S." But how does that relate to George W. Bush or the Iraq war? The U.S. has supported the Egyptian government for decades, a policy that has been continued by Barack Obama and the Democratic Congress. Again, what is the point?

UPDATE #4: From Mediaite via HotAir headlines: Chris Matthews losing battle against obsession
In today’s clip, Matthews wonders why “know-nothings” Bachmann and Palin are so celebrated by Republicans. His guests attempt to soothe Matthews with the fact that, in their opinion, neither are serious candidates for President, and that by comparison, Bachmann and Palin make people like Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty look so much better. However, Matthews more accurately comes to his own conclusion, which also gives us a peek into the rationale behind his obsession with the dynamic duo: “I’m afraid [Palin and Bachmann] make [people like Romney and Pawlenty] look boring.” ...
UPDATE #5: Another Instalink here. Thanks again!

  1. Can someone ask Chris who's buried in Grant's Tomb?

  2. Chris Matthews Sputnik moment.

  3. Perhaps Mr Matthews is limited in his commentary to that which someone has written for him, and that these writers may in fact be enjoying themselves at his expense.

    Cheers

  5. Well, he did call Rep. Bachmann a 'balloonhead' for stating that John Quincy Adams, one of our forebearers, was against slavery.

The only reply to that is Amistad.

Most be nice to have as your lawyer a former President and current member of the House when presenting your case to the US Supreme Court.

  6. Is is possible that Chris Mathews has syphilis. That would explain the tingle he had running up his leg and also the fact he said the Panama Canal is in Egypt as Syphilis destroys the brain.

  7. You mean the Panama Canal that's in PANAMA??? LOL!

  8. all 25 of chris' viewers will be very upset.

  9. Panama Canal. Tingles running up his leg from of "57 states", "the police acted stupidly", and "spread the wealth" Obama. The first guy can't hear, but can he read & write? And did I hear Michelle Bernard say 'monetORY' policy? And she's deriding Bachmann?

Keep it up Chris - you're guaranteeing another Republican sweep in 2012.

  10. WWII did not get us out of the Great Depression either. It was the death of FDR and his meddling, along the end of the war which left us with a freer economy and with most other industrial economies in wartime ruins that gave us the leg up.

  11. In all likelihood he misspoke and meant to the Suez Canal.

  12. If Chris is really this dumb, he's unfit to hold public office.

  13. Great video. I never cease to learn. For almost 60 years I was`wrong.

  14. Re: anonymous @1:50 pm
It was either a misspeaking or a "typo" by the teleprompter writers. The point tho is, if he is calling people bubbleheads, suggesting that they are intellectual lightweights...well, he is getting the same benefit of the doubt he gives others.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Most likely he did, anonymous. However, he's been deriding anyone on the right who has made a verbal stumble. You know the old saying, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander?"

    ReplyDelete
  16. What are going on about? Matthews is an idiot, but he didn't say anything wrong about the Suez Canal. He never said the Suez Canal was contained entirely within Egypt - he said "Egypt has the Suez Canal." Which they do. Making up issues doesn't do you or anybody else any favors.

  17. Uh, JP, listen to the video again. Chrissie didn't say the SUEZ canal was in Egypt, entirely or otherwise. He said the PANAMA Canal is in Egypt.

Anon, yes. He probably did MEAN to say the Suez, but he didn't, did he? If he can castigate Sarah Palin for saying 'North Korea is our ally, uh, I mean SOUTH Korea', then surely we can have a little fun at his expense over this.

  18. he said Suez canal at the end of the video..lol

  19. "Well, he did call Rep. Bachmann a 'balloonhead' for stating that John Quincy Adams, one of our forebearers, was against slavery."

    -----

Actually, Bachmann said our forebearers worked tirelessly until slavery was ended. Matthews was pointing out that the Civil War ended slavery, not political discourse, especially by JQA who died over a decade before then. That was why he called her a 'balloon-head'.

  20. Okay. All right. Fine. I'll concede that Matthews is a brainless hack if you'll concede that Palin is a brainless hack.

Of course, last I checked, only one of them was seriously suggested as presidential material. (Hint: it wasn't The Tingler.)

  21. He realized his mistake and said Suez a minute or two later...

    Nothing to see here.

  22. All this begs the question.

Since Matthews was a speech writer for Jimmy Carter was Jimmy naturally stupid or was it Chris that made him look and sound stupid?

    Enquiring minds want to know.

  23. In all likelihood he misspoke and meant to the Suez Canal.

professional reporters should know better, have taken classes, gotten degrees in journalism, etc, and if they *do* mis-speak, should know to promptly correct it.

But that's just on real news channels, not some joke called 'Fox News,' a.k.a. 'Faux Noise.'

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's lucky none of you guys watch Fox News. You don't do you?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Maybe this was a Freudian slip - he had his old boss Carter on the brain and like Carter's give away of the Panama Canal - he's hoping Obama can help "give away" the Suez Canal to another third world group of disenfranchised radicals.

    ReplyDelete
  26. As Palin says, "WTF?"

This was a WTF Tingles moment.

  27. Poor mean, hateful, stupid Chris Matthews. He can't wait to run down others for misspoken words,
little gaffs, etc. and he definitely said in Egypt the Nile and the "Panama Canal." Well, I want the chance to smear his ugly face in the pot for this the way he treats others. Look at the things Joe Biden has said, Obama calling a Corps man a Corpse-man. Did we hear one giggle or hateful recourse about this? He has impotent envy I guess or he wouldn't make a whole program smearing the delightful, smart, wonderful women who are so loved, while no one even likes him. ha ha ha. He's got an itsy, bitsy tiny weenie, yellow polka dot bikini.

  28. I'm not a huge Newt Gingrich fan but lately Chris Mathews is one one of his subliminal rants to the voting youth droping little tid-bits like Newt uses the word "automobile" and then say "who uses that word anymore", is this guy serious? Does he really believe we don't notice his overt BS?, Or are his fans that terribly disabled? Is this guy real, can the youth of this country not see through this jerk--- playing them like the Democrats have played minority voters for decades? Mathews is 2 years younger than Gingrich and constantly belittles him for being too old to understand the countries issues. Roughly 32 years between Obama and our youngest voters, I bet the youth don't notice Obama's 32 year delta at all.
