Video: Obama speech at Kalamazoo puts student behind him to sleep. Obama: "when you screw up ... it's the easiest thing in the world to start looking around for someone to blame"

The kid actually fell asleep right behind The One:
And what would an Obama speech be without the most transparent President running the most transparent administration evah first meeting with Democrat donors behind closed doors:
The full text of Obama's campaign speech can be found at the Detroit News: Full text: President Obama's speech. The highlight?
There will be times when you screw up, when you hurt the people you love, when you stray from your most deeply held values.

And when that happens, it's the easiest thing in the world to start looking around for someone to blame.
This from the guy that can't stop pointing his finger at anyone but himself. Bush? BP? Wall Street? Hello???

UPDATE: He also 'misspoke' when he said "me watch tv" instead of "we watch tv:"
UPDATE #2: From the AP via Breitbart: Obama to high school grads: 'Don't make excuses'. Classic doublethink doubletalk from The One.
"To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which canceled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself -- that was the ultimate subtlety; consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word 'doublethink' involved the use of doublethink." - from George Orwell's 1984

UPDATE #3: Linked by Gateway Pundit! Thanks! Jim Hoft includes a list of Obama finger-pointing:
The Republican Senators whipped up this list after the president’s speech:

ON AMERICA’S CHALLENGES
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “When I Showed Up After Inauguration, They Had Left A Big Mess On The Floor.  So I Got A Mop, And I Started Cleaning Up Their Mess.” (President Obama, Remarks, Norfolk, VA, 10/27/09)
ON THE ECONOMY
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “By Any Measure, My Administration Inherited A Fiscal Disaster.” (President Obama, Remarks, 3/4/09)
ON DEFICITS
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “Now, If We Had Taken Office In Ordinary Times, I Would Have Liked Nothing More Than To Start Bringing Down The Deficit. But We Took Office Amid A Crisis.” (President Obama, State Of The Union Address, 1/27/10)
ON THE ADMINISTRATION’S BUDGET
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “My Budget Does Not Attempt To Solve Every Problem Or Address Every Issue.  It Reflects The Stark Reality Of What We’ve Inherited – A Trillion Dollar Deficit, A Financial Crisis, And A Costly Recession.” (President Obama, Remarks To A Joint Session Of Congress, 2/24/09)
ON DEMOCRAT ELECTORAL LOSSES
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “Here’s My Assessment Of Not Just The Vote In Massachusetts, But The Mood Around The Country… People Are Angry And They Are Frustrated. Not Just Because Of What’s Happened In The Last Year Or Two Years, But What’s Happened Over The Last Eight Years.” (“Exclusive: President Obama Says Voter Anger, Frustration Key to Republican Victory in Massachusetts Senate,” ABC News, 1/20/10)
ON THE OIL SPILL
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “When Interior Secretary Ken Salazar Took Office, For Example, He Found A Minerals And Management Services Agency That Had Been Plagued By Corruption For Years …” (President Obama, Remarks, 6/1/10)
•    OBAMA: “The Habit [At MMS], Predating My Administration, Was You Just Automatically Gave The Environmental Waiver.” (President Obama, Remarks, 5/27/10)
ON HIS ADMINISTRATION’S ECONOMIC ACTIONS
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “We Had To Act Fast.  And Unfortunately We Didn’t Have All The Tools That We Needed To Act Fast Because You Had A Previous Congress And A Previous Administration That Had Left A $1.3 Trillion Deficit Wrapped Up In A Bow That Turned Surpluses Into Deficits As A Consequence Of A Whole Host Of Irresponsible Policies.” (President Obama, Remarks, 5/26/10)
ON AMERICA’S STANDING ABROAD
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “Well, First Of All, During The Campaign I Did Not Say That Some Of That Loss Of Authority Was Inevitable. I Said It Was Traced To Very Specific Decisions That The Previous Administration Had Made That I Believed Had Lowered Our Standing In The World. And That Wasn’t Simply My Opinion; That Was, It Turns Out, The Opinion Of Many People Around The World. I would like to think that with my election and the early decisions that we’ve made, that you’re starting to see some restoration of America’s standing in the world.  And although, as you know, I always mistrust polls, international polls seem to indicate that you’re seeing people more hopeful about America’s leadership.” (President Obama, Press Conference, 4/2/09)
ON AMERICAN HEALTH CARE ABUSES
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “And By The Way, I Don’t Recall Any Of These Republicans Trying To Do Anything About Insurance Companies’ Abuses During All The Years They Were In Charge.” (President Obama, Remarks At St. Charles High School, St. Charles, MO, 3/10/10)
ON GUANTANAMO
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “The Problem Of What To Do With Guantanamo Detainees Was Not Caused By My Decision To Close The Facility; The Problem Exists Because Of The Decision To Open Guantanamo In The First Place.” (President Obama, Remarks On National Security, National Archives, Washington, D.C., 5/21/09)

Weapons-grade stupid: Detroit News political blogger convinced that Granholm should have a 3rd term to "make a difference in Michigan"

Dude - she's been here for 8 years! 8 years of misery. 8 years heralding in Michigan's own lost decade. 8 years that have seen Michigan lose 1,000,000 jobs, including lost jobs every single year of Granholm's 2 terms. 8 years that have seen the Michigan government become the #1 employer in the state. But according to Detroit News political blogger Robert Smith Jr, she should have 4 more years. Why, you may ask? Because she made a good speech. I kid you not! It is people like Smith that elected the incompetent amateur Barack Hussein Obama that is now doing to the US what Granholm did to Michigan. Apparently, talking a good game is far superior to actual results. From his blog on the DetNews: A passionate speechmaker
Gov. Jennifer Granholm has a poor job rating and that is for all of her years in office. Granholm won over some strong opposition both times she was elected. The good governor beat rich and popular men alike. She is a great speechmaker.
I was stirred by every word of one of her recent speeches. I thought if she could only run again, she would win and have four more years to make a difference in Michigan, but she can't run again. If she could, her Mackinac Island speech would get her re-elected.
Her speech is one I have written about just the other day: Video: Granholm defends her lack of leadership. After losing 1,000,000 jobs she says 'stay the course!' Here are the first 6 minutes:
All talk, no substance. Good intentions, bad results. Incredibly, Smith's piece ends with this:
...Democrats will have to deal with the fact that they had the seat for the last eight years and things got worse every year.
And yet Smith wants 4 more years of the same because... ??? Talk about bringing teh stupid!

Israel has leftists that hate their country just like we have here

Leftism is its own religion and supersedes any loyalty to king and country. We have plenty of that here in the US, including unfortunately the Commander in Chief. Israel has its own kooks that recently came out in a show of public support for the flotilla of fools that ran a military blockade to give aid to terrorists that want to wipe Israel off the map. Via Gateway Pundit: Idiot Leftist Jews Hold Massive Pro-Gaza Flotilla Rally in Tel Aviv. Here’s the video:

Note the Che Guevara shirts. From Ynetnews:
Thousands of leftist activists marched in Tel Aviv Saturday evening to mark “43 years of occupation,” while taking the opportunity to slam recent IDF raids on Gaza-bound ships.

A smoke grenade was hurled at the protesters outside the Tel Aviv Museum. No injuries were reported in the incident. Later, right-wing protesters tried to attack leftist activist Uri Avneri, snatching signs he was carrying.

The leftist protesters, who were walking from Rabin Square to the Tel Aviv Museum, were holding up signs reading “The government is sinking all of us – we must aspire for peace.” Other marchers held up signs reading “Israel, Palestine, two states for two people” and “We love the country but are ashamed of the government.”
These people are standing with those that wouldn’t hesitate for an instance to behead every last one of them and throw their bodies into the sea, down to the last woman and child. It is pure idiocy.

Detroit News Political Blogger Has A Fever, And The Only Prescription Is More Racism!

The racial bean counters are up to their same old tac, and Detroit News political blogger Robert Smith Jr is throwing down the hammer on... something. He has a problem with how the stimulus money is being spent, but offers no quantitative numbers, but still sees... something. It's like his 6th sense. And because of that 6th sense, he goes all Robert Reich on us (Mandating Discrimination with Stimulus Funds):
That mandated discrimination based on skin pigmentation is exactly the recipe to cure Smith of his affliction with his 6th sense. It's a gift. And a curse: Affirmative action and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
All across the United States people are back at work through a federal program meant to simulate the economy. As I ride, walk or run up and down the sidewalks of the big cities or drive interstate highways, I see work and I see the signs saying a project is a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

What I don't see are faces of people of color. ...
Smith offers no statistics and is basing his complete premise on what HE sees. In a demonstration of a non-sequitur, he then goes on to point at that since the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (presumably), there has been an 11 percent drop in minority enrollment. If memory serves, that less than the percentage drop in minority applications, but anyway. Ironically, Smith gets into the founding of affirimative action:

The term affirmative action was first introduced by President John Kennedy in 1961 as a method of redressing discrimination.
This is ironic because the original affirmative action order by President John F Kennedy read, in part:

WHEREAS discrimination because of race, creed, color, or national origin is
contrary to the
Constitutional principles
and policies of the United States; and 13 CFR 1960 Supp. ...
SEC. 202. All executive departments and agencies are directed to initiate forthwith studies of current government employment practices within their responsibility. The studies shall be in such form as the Committee may prescribe and shall include statistics on current employment patterns, a review of current procedures, and the recommendation of positive measures for the elimination of any discrimination, direct or indirect, which now exists. ...
In exactness, liberals have turned affirmative action on its head. The affirmative action order was to ban any discrimination and have a color-blind society. The liberals abhor such a value and prefer to divide people by race, sex, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc.Smith goes on to claim that minorities ought to get a bigger percentage of the taxpayer booty:
Today America needs something to help civil rights laws and constitutional guarantees make sure people of color and women share in America's tax dollars.
That would be spreading the wealth around:
Lastly, Smith points to a problem and an illogical solution:
Detroit is spending federal tax dollars and is about to spend more money on constructing school buildings (not on the children or families in need) and the story is that local Detroiters will not get these construction jobs because they don't have the skills and can't pass the drug test.
The truth is that if those in power don't have to hire people of color they will not.
Uh - is Smith saying that projects getting stimulus money should be forced by law to hire unqualified druggies based on skin color?

WH reporter and wicked witch of the middle east Helen Thomas forced to retire in disgrace

She is so gone that she didn't even pack her bags. Her 'retirement' is effective immediately. As in before you ever read this. It comes after these anti-Semitic remarks that were caught on a flip cam (yea for technology!):
Helen Thomas had the gall to get caught on tape saying what mainstream elitist liberals think. For that, she got the ax. From The Hill via memeorandumHelen Thomas retires ‘effective immediately’ after Israel remarks
Helen Thomas announced Monday that "she is retiring, effective immediately," according to a statement from Hearst newspapers.

Her decision comes after her controversial remarks about Israel hit the blogosphere. She later apologized for her comments, saying she "deeply regretted" making them.
Let's be honest. The apology was a non-apology apology that seems to be in vogue these days. She was sorry for making the statement, rather than being sorry for having such anti-Semetic opinions.
White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) President Ed Chen criticized her in a statement Monday, sent out before the news of her resignation.
Last year, she also equated the US to terrorists and it barely made a ripple:
Helen “The day Dick Cheney is going to run for president, I’ll kill myself” Thomas is an al-Quaeda sympathizer, and her quote in that sad episode will go down in a long list of idiocy:
“Their tactics are horrible, but so are ours.”
Idiocy that includes telling the Jews to go back to the gas chamber. There's plenty of commentary around the blogosphere today on the departure of the wicked witch of the Mideast, including from Another Black Conservative, The Jawa Report, Right Wing News, Big JournalismMichelle Malkin, Pajamas Media, NewsBusters, RedState, Below The Beltway, Riehl World View, Weasel ZippersTownhall.com, protein wisdom, Power Line, The Greenroom, YID With LID, TigerHawk, The Sundries Shack, The Corner on NRO, The Daily Caller, Cassy Fiano, Gateway Pundit, Moonbattery, JammieWearingFool and Hot Air. Liberal media shocked, SHOCKED! That Rush Limbaugh would have gay man sing at his wedding

As many know by now, Rush Limbaugh got married this Saturday (story from the NY Daily News via memeorandum). That’s not what surprised people, especially those in the liberal MSM. What surprised them was that Rush paid Elton John a cool $1 million to entertain his wedding party. Elton John is notoriously gay and Rush is against gay marriage so the MSM have a problem with the arrangement, including at eth Detroit Free Press: Rush Limbaugh weds, Elton John sings
Not so odd is Saturday night conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh marrying for the fourth time. What is a little puzzling is that the outspoken gay-marriage opposer had Sir Elton John sing.

According to a report by News Corp. Corporation (which owns Fox News), Limbaugh, 59, married Kathryn Rogers, 33, on Saturday night at the Ponce de Leon ballroom of Florida's well-known Breakers hotel in Palm Beach.

"Tiny Dancer" singer John played for the 400 guests, including former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove, actor-politician Fred Thompson, Fox News commentator Sean Hannity and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

John, according to News Corp., was paid a cool $1 million for the wedded blissful performance.
As I have stated many times on this blog, those like myself that oppose gay marriage do not oppose gay people. There is a difference in opposing the gay agenda to opposing gay people. I won’t speak for Rush, but from my end I oppose gay marriage because the definition of traditional marriage is one defined by God Almighty and cannot be changed by man, any more than the laws of nature like gravity that were put in place by God can be repealed by man. Gay marriage has nothing to do with equality, but rather the advancement of an agenda. Who in this country cannot hook up with whomever they want, hold their own ceremony, exchange rings and then live together for life? Why must the state - aka We The People - endorse the gay ceremony? Or the gay relationship for that matter? None of this has anything to do with marriage of course, or equality or love. It has to do with jamming the gay agenda down the throats of We the People and indoctrinating our children into said lifestyle. If someone wants another person to have hospital visitation rights, can't they just give that other person power of attorney? All such arguments are non-issues.

Here's a question I would like anyone in the gay community to answer: if it is all about equality, why limit it to 2 people? Why not let a man marry 2 women? Threesome marriages? Foursomes? Polygamy? Heck - why not let a woman marry a dog? Or a rollercoaster? The answer as I mentioned above is that gay marriage has little to do with equality or love, but does have a lot to do with the pushing of an agenda onto a society that doesn't want it.

Rush Limbaugh opposes gay marriage. He does not oppose gay people. And likely like myself, he knows several gay people as friends or close acquaintances. Why the shock from liberals?

Google response to Blogger outage same as Obama's response to oil spill in Gulf

Google Blogger has been down since sometime late yesterday afternoon. Thankfully I had written my posts prior to the outage and had them scheduled to post into the evening. Google seems not to care about bloggers since they have not updated issues with Blogger since March 28 2010. This morning, the problem persisted and whenever I tried writing a new post I was greeted with this message:

If you click on Blogger status, this is what you get:
Only in the forums did I find out that it wasn’t just me, something I figured since I couldn’t post from Firefox, Chrome or IE or from different computers away from my home. Google had a single response on the forum at 4:09am by the not so great ‘gatsby:’

Not a single user found that helpful. As of now, 4:25pm, Blogger is back up for the first time in 24 hours. Ugh...

Obama throws whales under the bus, backs lifting global ban, breaks yet another campaign promise

That's a big load under that bus. Fortunately, Obama is prepared to throw under whatever can possibly be thrown:
From FoxNews: Obama Under Fire for Backing Deal to Lift Global Ban on Commercial Whaling
Environmentalists, already peeved with the administration’s handling of the Gulf oil spill, are accusing President Obama of breaking his campaign pledge to end the slaughter of whales.

The Obama administration is leading an effort within the International Whaling Commission to lift a 24-year international ban on commercial whaling for Japan, Norway and Iceland, the remaining three countries in the 88-member commission that still hunt whales.

The administration argues that the new deal will save thousands of whales over the next decade by stopping the three countries from illegally exploiting loopholes in the moratorium.
Uh - how does that save any whales whatsoever, let alone 'thousands?'
..."That moratorium on commercial whaling was the greatest conservation victory of the 20th century. And in 2010 to be waving the white flag or bowing to the stubbornness of the last three countries engaged in the practice is a mind-numbingly dumb idea," Patrick Ramage, the whaling director at the International Fund for Animal Welfare, told FoxNews.com.

Several environmental groups have joined forces to pressure Obama to withdraw his support for the deal before the whaling commission votes June 20 in Morocco on whether to lift the ban that was championed by President Reagan.
Well, since Obama wants to be the anti-Reagan, this move is only logical for him. As for the environmental groups, did they expect that Obama was being honest? Why would Obama keep his promise to them? What, are they going to turn around and vote Republican? I always find it ironic too that these "save the ______" groups support politicians that support abortions. Killing an animal is immoral to them, but killing an innocent baby doesn't even cause them to blink. I'd be more apt to listen to them if there was logical consistency in the views. Right now, there aren't.

On the 66th Anniversary of D-Day

One year ago today, I posted a great video of Ronald Reagan speaking at the 40th anniversary of D-Day, and how Google missed the entire boat. Neither has changed. The Ronald Reagan speech is still awesome, and Google again missed the boat. First, Reagan's speech:
And here's Google today:

Last year I wrote this: Liberal Bias: When Fossil Was Released, Google Honored That, But Can't Honor D-Day Anniversary UPDATE: Wikipedia Too!
Here was what Google looked like on May 20th, 2009, during the media Blitzkrieg of the fossil known as "Ida" that was supposed to squash all deniers of evolution under the weight of someones conjecture regarding some bones:Today, the anniversary of D-Day, Google looks like this:What gives, Google??? It's been bugging me all day as I have used Google throughout, as usual. Is this Tetris Day or something???

UPDATE: Moonbattery has more:
It seems today is also the 25th anniversary of Tetris, a Soviet video game. I had never heard of Tetris, but apparently it is much more significant than the sacrifices made on Omaha Beach, at least from Google's point of view.
Wikipedia offers an On This Day feature on its main page. Here it is for today:
Wikipedia_D-Day.jpg
Even the crowning of Gustav Vasa as King of Sweden in 1523 is more important than D-Day, according to the overseers of the online establishment.
If it were up to moonbats, the courage of D-Day's martyrs would be forgotten, as would be the cause they died for.
Doug Powers has more today on Google's miss: It’s June 6th — Isn’t Google Forgetting Something Again?
On June 6th the year before that, Google recognized the birthday of Spanish painter Diego Velasquez:

null

...Google is purposefully ignoring a big event, aren’t they? Don’t they know that this is the 77th anniversary of the opening of the first drive-in movie theater? For shame.
Wikipedia, bu the way, now stacks events chronologically so that D-Day can be buried in their info without looking biased. Here's the link to their June 6 roundup. Cassy Fiano throws up these videos for this day in history:
UPDATE: From Jessica's Well via HotAir headlines: Why I use Bing instead of Google: June 6th Version
bing-v-google-on-dday.jpg
Check out their respective pages on June 6. Bing's home page (above) shows an aerial photograph of the American Cemetery located in Normandy.
Google? Nothing. Move along. Nothing to see here. Nothing of note ever happened on June 6th.
Actually this is just one of the reasons. The main reason is that I just don't trust Google. Google makes money for one reason and one reason only: They know a bunch of stuff about you and the more they know the more they get paid. If you could break the old Stasi into two separate operating entities, one that ran the informants and the other that did the interrogations and disappearances, Google could run the former.
But not the latter....because their corporate motto is "Don't be evil", you see.

UN report urges forcing vegan diet on all humans to save planet from... global warming

There has been no global warming for the past 11 years. No 'statistically significant' warming since 1995 (abeith that doesn't deter Obama's EPA chief:EPA Chief Lisa Jackson: Fifteen Years With No Global Warming Doesn't Mean There's No Global Warming). Historical records indicate that it was far warmer in the past than it is now. In addition, humans are responsible for only 3% of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, 97% being produced naturally mostly by the oceans and biodegrading vegetation. Yet the food Nazis at the UN want to force us into vegan diets that will do nothing to solve a problem that doesn't exist. From the UK Guardian: UN urges global move to meat and dairy-free diet
A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change, a UN report said today.

As the global population surges towards a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050, western tastes for diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable, says the report from United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management.

It says: "Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products."

Professor Edgar Hertwich, the lead author of the report, said: "Animal products cause more damage than [producing] construction minerals such as sand or cement, plastics or metals. Biomass and crops for animals are as damaging as [burning] fossil fuels."
But biomass and crops for human consumption is not? What the heck is the difference? A crop is a crop, no? One of the supposed lynch pins of people going vegetarian, or vegan, these days is that it decreases the load on the planet (whatever than means anyway). Another common meme - this would be the PETA variety - is that eating meat is immoral (Jesus ate meat, so where does such a moral stand comes from?). Another is that it is healthier. That's only true insofar as it is far harder to overeat on vegan foods. That being said, vegetarian foods tend not to have a complete amino acid profile (all animal protein is complete thus having all essential amino acids), lacks especially the B-vitamins, and essential fatty acids (depending on the food mix). In any case, the latter arguments have been largely debunked or are a wash, while the former has continued to be a staple for vegetarian enthusiasts. Which brings me to this mention of a recent study by an environmentalist group determined that going vegetarian is even worse for the environment than eating meat.

We have a saying in the engineering community - there is no such thing as a free lunch. That goes right to the heart of the "green energy" movement and to vegetarianism as a planet saving measure. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics (with corollaries known as the "law of unintended consequences," "Murphy's Law," etc) was not imposed by man and cannot be repealed by man. It is a law of nature the bounds of which we must live withing. Thus, there is a negative consequence to everything, especially wishful thinking. By the way, the Guardian made mention of discredited IPCC hack Rajendra Pachauri. Thus I will end with this: Pic of the day: Global warming hoax - so easy a UN Ambassador can do it!

Video: Deranged porn actor dies because of lots of unprotected sex and getting tasered off a cliff, but mostly by getting tasered off a cliff

You just knew this wasn't going to end well. A porn actor, - Stephen Hill aka Steve Driver -  flipped out a few days ago and stabbed a few of his coworkers with a samurai sword that was there as a stage prop. Fox News reported: Porn Actor Allegedly Kills 1, Hurts 2 at LA Studio
Stephen Hill, 34, attacked his colleagues during a small social gathering late Tuesday at Ultima DVD Inc.'s distribution and production center in Van Nuys, Los Angeles police Detective Joel Price said.

Hill had been told a week earlier to leave the studio by Wednesday.

"There was no indication that things were going to get violent, there was nothing that provoked this attack, but at some point Steven chose to arm himself with what can be best described as a sword," Price said. "He then used that sword against those three victims."

Hill attacked one man near the back on the facility and turned on two others when they tried to intervene, police said. A 30-year-old man who tried to help suffered a stab wound to the torso and died at a hospital. The other two victims were expected to survive.

Hill fled in an SUV with the weapon, one of several swords at the site, Price said.

Eric Jover, who is listed as Ultima's contact on public documents, did not respond to phone and e-mail messages seeking comment.
The long arm of the law caught up with him, ironically, on top of a hill near a cliff. Hill still had the samurai sword with him. He was tasered. Gravity took hold and the rest, as they say, is history. Here's the raw footage of how the standoff ended:
And a local news report:

Detroit Public Schools Manager: System can only sustain 33% of student population because of teacher pensions, benefits

Detroit Public Schools (DPS) has 76,000 students currently. Emergency financial manager Robert Bobb says that only 26,000 can be adequately served. Why? 1) Pensions. 2) Healthcare benefits. The unions are sucking the system dry. To boot, the teachers in DPS have utterly failed the students, as indicated by the obscene 25% graduation rate. From The Detroit Free Press: Bobb: DPS can only support 26,000 students
Robert Bobb, Detroit schools emergency financial manager, said the 76,000 student Detroit district can only support 26,000 students unless it makes deep cuts in operating and long-term costs such as retirement and health care for employees.

He told the Detroit Regional Chamber's policy conference that he'll soon unveil a plan to reorganize Detroit public schools after it's approved by Gov. Jennifer Granholml (sp), who appointed him to oversee the district's finances.

Bobb said he will release a financial report to show the depth of the district's financial problems and the remedies needed. “That’s what we have to show the community,” Bobb said during a panel discussion on the state of Michigan education. “At the end of the day, we’re going to give a long term deficit elimination plan.”

Panelist Art Van Elslander, founder of Art Van Furniture, said schools are failing and attempts at reforms are "Band-Aids." He said he wants to hire 100 salesman for his 32 stores around the state, but can’t find qualified applicants, and he blamed a substandard education system.

The quality if (sp) not there, they lack in math, interpersonal skills, listening ability,” Van Elslander said. ...
The only way to make public schools better are to make them compete. In that sense, I favor school vouchers to let the taxpayers decide where their kids go to school. Schools that perform will get more students will excel and grow. Schools that do not perform will go under. As they should. There is no incentive right now to innovate. Why is it that kids have to go to a particular school based on where they live? We are not made to get gas from only the closest gas station to our home. Or go to only one grocery store. If we were, do you think that gas station or grocery store would have any incentive whatsoever to improve its services? Nope. Even our public universities where I teach do not have a monopoly on any student population. We are forced to compete with other institutions for students. What we Michiganders have to get straight at the outset of any discussion is that support for public education is what matters, not necessarily the support of public schools. Those two have been diverging for some time and it has accelerated in the last decade. Rather than centers for learning, K-12 school districts - controlled largely by teachers unions - have become rackets, and no district exemplifies that more than DPS.

Of course, vouchers are out of the question for unions. They won't even entertain the notion. Nope. Have to keep kids shackled to failed public schools to keep the victim class alive. Vouchers were a proven success in DC. Obama and his education secretary Arne Duncan were the architects that betrayed the children in Washington DC that was running a successful voucher program that proved to be both effective and cost only a quarter (that's right - 25%) of what the public schools were taking in. Duncan and Obama had the data showing the success of the program before they decided to kill it off at the behest of the teachers unions. I have posted on that shameful act several times in this blog, such as these:

Again, there is a big difference between supporting public education and supporting public schools and that gulf is widening by the day. Time for Detroit, and all of us, to set the priority. I've chosen mine and am siding with the children. Where will everyone else be?

The Fastest Growing Class of U.S. Millionaires: Government Workers! Make Double What Private Workers Make

Government workers are supposed to be in the service industry. That is, serving the taxpayers. But what happens when unions dominate the landscape to such an extent that taxpayer serve government workers and not the only way around? That would be called serfdom, something that we seem headed towards. Nationally, there are now more public sector union employees than private sector (Majority of union workers now working for the government, not private sector):

And here's a graph of private sector jobs versus public sector jobs over this recession:
And it's not enough for the unions. With less private sector jobs to support their public sector wages and benefits, they want tax increases and can get them being that they outright own many politicians both Democrat and Republican (but mostly Democrat). From Forbes via Carp Diem: The Millionaire Cop Next Door
It is said that government workers now make, on average, 30% more than private sector workers. Put that fantasy aside. It far underestimates the real figures. By my calculations, government workers make more than twice as much.  Government workers are America's fastest-growing millionaires.
Doubt it? Then ask yourself: What is the net present value of an $80,000 annual pension payout with additional full health benefits? Working backward, the total NPV would depend on expected returns of a basket of safe investments--blue chip stocks, dividends and U.S. Treasury bonds.
Investment pros like my friend Barry Glassman say 4% is a reasonable return today. That's a pitiful yield, isn't it? It is sure to disappoint the scores of millions of baby boomers who will soon enter retirement with nothing more than their desiccated 401(k)s, down 30% on average from 30 months ago, and a bit of Social Security.
Based on this small but unfortunately realistic 4% return, an $80,000 annual pension payout implies a rather large pot of money behind it--$2 million, to be precise.
That's a lot. One might guess that a $2 million stash would be in the 95th percentile for the 77 million baby boomers who will soon face retirement.
That $2 million also happens to be the implied booty of your average California policeman who retires at age 55. Typical cities in California have a police officer's retirement plan that works as follows: 3% at 50. As the North County Times of Carlsbad, Calif., explains:
Carlsbad offers its police and firefighters a "3-percent-at-50" retirement plan, meaning that emergency services workers who retire at age 50 can get 3 percent of their highest salary times the number of years they have worked for the city.
City officials have said that in Carlsbad, the average firefighter or police officer typically retires at age 55 and has 28 years of service. Using the 3 percent salary calculation, that person would receive an annual city pension of $76,440.
That does not include health benefits, which might push real retirement compensation close to $100,000 a year.
Who are America's fastest-growing class of millionaires? They are police officers, firefighters, teachers and federal bureaucrats who, unless things change drastically, will be paid something near their full salaries every year--until death--after retiring in their mid-50s. That is equivalent to a retirement sum worth millions of dollars.
Read the rest. Someone please argue how any such thing is sustainable?

Video: Pilot almost crashes into Detroit River during Red Bull Air Race World Championship

The pilot very nearly bit it, but pulled up just as his plane hit the water:
The Detroit Free Press picked up on the incident: Touch and go on the Detroit River
Matt Hall won’t forget the Detroit River anytime soon. On Saturday, he almost became part of it during qualifying for the Windsor round of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

Hall, 39, of Australia, a former RAAF pilot, tore the cowling off the right-hand wheel of his MXS-R race plane as he barely avoided crashing into the river at over 200 m.p.h. on his return run through the air gates in the first qualifying session. He was disqualified and will have to attempt to make today’s final this afternoon in a wildcard shootout.

The highly decorated Aussie fighter pilot was leading on times on Saturday when the left wing and part of the undercarriage of his plane dipped into the water following a high-G maneuver on the middle section of racetrack. Hall looked certain to smash into the river in front of Hart Plaza, but he powered up his aircraft and shot back into the sky.

The crowd lining the Windsor side of the river near Caesar’s Palace clapped their approval at Hall’s big save from the near-crash, the result of aerodynamic wing stall. Despite the damage, he landed safely back at the Windsor Airport, where his No. 95 race plane underwent repairs.

...It’s touch and go if Hall’s plane will be ready Sunday, however.

Smart power? Clinton to Queen Elizabeth II: Happy Birthday! Queen to Clinton: It's Not My Birthday You Bloody Idiot!

The lunatics have taken over the DC asylum.
Being the Secretary of State, you have tough things to do like negotiations, and easy things to do like wish people happy birthday. If Clinton can't do the latter correctly, what makes anyone think she can do the former? In another in a string of gaffes as Sec of State, Clinton wished Queen Elizabeth 2.0 a happy birthday... a week too soon. From the UK Telegraph via memeorandumQueen's birthday gaffe leaves Hillary Clinton red faced
An official statement from the US foreign policy chief paid tribute to the "Queen’s life and legacy,” despite the fact that the Monarch does not celebrate her official birthday until next weekend.

The diplomatic faux pas, sent on behalf of President Barack Obama and the American people on Friday, also celebrated the "special relationship" between the British and US governments.

"On this celebratory occasion, we pay tribute to the Queen's life and legacy and honour the special relationship between our two nations," Mrs Clinton said.

“The young princess Elizabeth helped rally her nation in the darkest days of that war, and she has remained a beacon of integrity and resolve ever since. The United States has always been grateful for her friendship and example.

“Once again, I wish Queen Elizabeth II a very happy birthday and peace and prosperity for the people of the United Kingdom in the year to come."

Mrs Clinton added that the “special relationship continues to provide a solid foundation as the United States and Britain”, which worked “side by side to meet the challenges of the 21st century”.

A spokesman for Mrs Clinton attemped to make light of the gaffe.

"We were a week early," Philip Crowley joked to reporters in Washington.

"As always, it is better to give a greeting a week early than a week late.”

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman added: “It was obviously a genuine mistake and there was no offence taken whatsoever”. She declined to say whether the State Department had apologised.
Last year, she made a stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image. (Another Ameteurish Gaffe by Hillary Clinton) Then there was the whole reset button controversy with Russia.
At least Clinton can remember basic names. Or not...

Gabriel Malor over at Ace of Spades has a roundup of Clinton gaffes:
1. Canada: NAFTA fiasco.
2. Poland: missile shield "misunderstanding".
3. UK: Churchill bust return.
4. Russia: "overcharge" button.
5. UK: insulting the Browns, the Queen.
6. France: not realizing that Chirac has been out of power for two years.
7. Brazil: Misspelling the Brazilian president's name.
8. Mexico: NAFTA
9. India: Thinking Kashmir is in Poh-kee-stan.
Gabe comments:
A catalog of diplomatic faux pas followed over the summer. Between then and now, the gaffes have been too numerous to count (though we try our best to document them all here at the HQ).
Obama and his amateurish administration are trying to learn on the job and failing miserably at it.
I would also add this as a gaffe as much as it was an insult to the US: Hillary Clinton To Africa: Corrupt Nigeria Election Kind Of Like U.S. In 2000 Or Something. She also screwed New York - the state she used to represent in the Senate as a carpetbagger -  out of $260 million. What we have here in the big scope of things is at least a 3-headed gaffe machine between Clinton, Biden and Obama. So here's the $64,000 question: do they know what the heck they're doing, other than taking our country for a joy ride???
Obama joy ride
