House Health Care Bill Makes Private Insurance Illegal!!!

I kid you not! And I wish I were! This should come as no surprise to anyone, as Democrats, despite their lip service to the contrary, are well-known to want government to run everything. As I have pointed out many times on this blog (one example here: Detroit Free Press Laments Rising Health Care Costs - Wants Rationing To Save Money!), this is a Democrat Party goal, and some of the looniest of the left have been quite open about it, such as IL Rep. Jan Schakowsky:

With that as a backdrop, here is the disturbing story on a small part of the largely unread House health care bill that Pelosi is pushing, from the Investors Business Daily via Instapundit and memorandum:
It didn't take long to run into an "uh-oh" moment when reading the House's "health care for all Americans" bill. Right there on Page 16 is a provision making individual private medical insurance illegal.

When we first saw the paragraph Tuesday, just after the 1,018-page document was released, we thought we surely must be misreading it. So we sought help from the House Ways and Means Committee.

It turns out we were right: The provision would indeed outlaw individual private coverage. Under the Orwellian header of "Protecting The Choice To Keep Current Coverage," the "Limitation On New Enrollment" section of the bill clearly states:

"Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day" of the year the legislation becomes law.

So we can all keep our coverage, just as promised — with, of course, exceptions: Those who currently have private individual coverage won't be able to change it. Nor will those who leave a company to work for themselves be free to buy individual plans from private carriers.

Read the whole thing. The big question is - what the heck is in the rest of the bill if just the above was found on page 16? In a way, I don't want to know, but we all have to know. Especially before it gets voted on. Just keep in mind who will be hurt the most by government-run health care:

Maybe you should read the bill before linking to someone's total misreading of it? See http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_07/019107.php for an explanation of just how low below minimal academic standards you fell on this one.
