The clinical pharmacist and Michigan State University researcher told Freeland Board of Education members this week as a follow-up to his childhood obesity study shows that sugary drinks plus foods high in calories and fat continue to threaten children's health.Note that "fat" is made out to be a culprit, even though virtually every American was on a moderate-to-high fat diet 100 years ago (lard sandwich anyone?), with no significant incidence of obesity, heart disease or diabetes (T2). This is one of the many gripes I have with nutrition science these days - the lack of science. Another snippet:
Wednesday 2/25, the Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan: Advocates for Healthy Weight in Children coalition unveiled a five-year strategy targeting fatness in response to Granholm's request. What exactly is "healthy weight?" Shouldn't these busybodies be more concerned with body composition? Body fat percentage versus lean mass? All these people appear to want to do is have every kid step on a scale every morning on the way into school, calculate them by the ridiculous BMI, and put them into "healthy" and "unhealthy" boxes. Just not a good idea. This last snippet bugs me also:
"This plan is designed to fight childhood obesity head-on by increasing access to physical activity and healthy food choices," the governor said.Who decides what's healthy? Another bureaucracy? I can tell you where that's going - the disastrous government food pyramid:
I don't think the Governor, nor any Board of Education, is aware that if you eat bread containing 40g carbohydrates (minus any fiber), will have the exact same effect as a sugary drink containing 40g sugar. That 40g of carbs will get converted to blood glucose at a 100% conversion rate. And without protein or fat to slow down the absorption rate, why bother limiting sugary drinks at all?
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. -C.S.
